How To Treat Skin After Chemical Peel

chemical peelChemical Peels are fantastic ways to rejuvenate your skin but what you do following the chemical peel is just as important to your skin care.  A lot of women get really into cleaning their faces and at times go too far, when you get a chemical peel your skin is extremely vulnerable and sensitive.  Below are a couple of important things to do after that will help replenish the skin.

Chemical peel is a process to remove the top, damaged layers of the skin, to reveal fresh and healthy tissue underneath and make the face appear smoother, younger and rejuvenated. It is an effective cosmetic procedure used to treat acne marks, dull skin and sun damage. Chemical peels can be had at a dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office as well as at home. These peels vary in depth from being superficial to very deep. Owing to the nature of this treatment, it is strongly recommended to care for your skin after undergoing a chemical peel. Post treatment care varies depending on the type of peel and condition of your skin, but there are some tips that are universal and every individual who has received this type of treatment should follow. Instructions

  1.  Sun Protection- Remember your skin becomes more vulnerable to Ultra Violet (UV) rays after undergoing a chemical peel, so avoid sun exposure as much as you can. It would be best to avoid the sun completely in the first couple of weeks after a peel. Wearing a sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin from UV rays, but the skin becomes sensitive to chemical sunscreens after such a cosmetic treatment. Depending upon the depth of the peel, you may be advised by your dermatologist to avoid sunscreen post-treatment until the skin completes the peeling phase. So try to protect your face from sunlight with the help of hats and sunglasses. You can also use a physical sun block containing zinc oxide. Image courtesy: pinkplague.com Sponsored Links
  2. Be Gentle With Your Skin- Instead of using a stiff washcloth on your face, switch to a gentler option like facial sponges or a baby washcloth. Itching or burning are common post-peel discomforts, but do not pick or scratch your skin at any cost. Picking, scratching or otherwise touching the treated skin increases risk of infection. 3. Moisturizer– Since dry skin is more vulnerable to cracks and possible scaring, it is important to keep the new skin soft and moist. Use a gentle moisturizer two to four times a day, but make sure your product should not contain exfoliants or irritating ingredients. Also avoid over-moisturizing. Image courtesy: webmd.com
  4. Don’t Exfoliate- Your aesthetician has already shed the dry and dead skin. Using facial scrubs and exfoliants during post treatment period will only irritate your skin further and could cause scarring in the skin.

best spa in utah. honestly

This last week we had our annual Black Magic Girls Night out and it was a huge hit!  The ladies were introduced to a true pampering session; appetizers, card reading, pumpkin facial, black candlelight massage and the list goes on.  In fact, one of those who were lucky enough to book a spot while they were open took the time to write what she thought about the whole night;  like Thomas Rhett says “and it goes like ooooo, what I wouldn’t dooo”.

best spa in utah. honestly

im a sucker for a good pampering. like, a REAL sucker. sometimes i just fill up the tub with good smelling wash and clothes my eyes and pretend im somewhere in bora bora soaking in a rose petal tub waiting for my ocean side massage

then the water starts to get cold and i realize im not even close to bora bora. nor will i be for a long while.
i am always looking for ways to pamper myself on a budget. and let me clarify, im no “budgeter” i actually suck at it, i just know that a good spa treatment usually costs and arm and a leg and i need all 4 of mine.
well, a couple weeks ago my trusty hubs told me about Mindful Women Spa in Ogden. almost every month they do whats called a “Girls Night Out” and for $99 you get refreshments, fun themed activities (this month was Taro Card reading and herbal wish making- yeah, it was awesome), a black candle massage and PUMPKIN facials. i mean… it doesnt get much better thank pumpkin everything in october.
PLUS you get to chill with your ladies. its a out of this world relaxing environment

$99! thats insane. i had to take them up on the deal. so park’s mom and i headed to South Ogden on wednesday for a night of bliss. and let me tell you what, it did not let me down. the staff at Mindful Women’s Spa is SO rad. they totally got into character in witch hats and funky leather leggings to make the evening extra special.
i was skeptical at first. $99… they are probably going to give me some dinky massage and a pumpkin face mask i could do at home. FAR from it, the massage was a full hour, deep tissue, music playing – and get this, the massage therapist didnt say a word to me. BLISS. doesnt it bug you when they yap away? me too.
the facial was also top notch. full blown medical grade facial that made me want to eat my own face because it smelled like pie.
pie face… perfection.
anyway, here is their website – http://mindfulwomenspa.com
they totally rock. they wont be doing another girls night during the holidays BUT they are doing a 12 days of christmas special that is supposed to be the bees knees.

Cure For HIV?

baby picMindful Women Spa is based off of living a healthier lifestyle; feeling beautiful and healthy from the inside out. Our skin & body care treatments help us touch home base with our bodies.  This article talks more along the lines of modern medicine, the possibility of monumental stepping stone in the medicine world; the curing of HIV.

(AP) — Doctors now have convincing evidence that they put HIV into remission, hopefully for good, in a Mississippi baby born with the AIDS virus — a medical first that is prompting a new look at how hard and fast such cases should be treated.

The case was reported earlier this year but some doctors were skeptical that the baby was really infected rather than testing positive because of exposure to virus in the mom’s blood.

The new report, published online Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, makes clear that the girl, now 3, was infected in the womb. She was treated unusually aggressively and shows no active infection despite stopping AIDS medicines 18 months ago.

Doctors won’t call it a cure because they don’t know what proof or how much time is needed to declare someone free of HIV infection, long feared to be permanent.

“We want to be very cautious here. We’re calling it remission because we’d like to observe the child for a longer time and be absolutely sure there’s no rebound,” said Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga, a University of Massachusetts AIDS expert involved in the baby’s care.

The government’s top AIDS scientist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, agreed.

“At minimum, the baby is in a clear remission. It is possible that the baby has actually been cured. We don’t have a definition for cure as we do for certain cancers, where after five years or so you can be relatively certain the person is not going to go and relapse,” he said. A scientist at his institute did sophisticated tests that showed no active virus in the child.

A government-sponsored international study starting in January aims to test early treatment in babies born with HIV to see if the results in this case can be reproduced.

PREVIOUS REPORT: Doctors report first cure of HIV in a child

Most HIV-infected moms in the U.S. get AIDS medicines during pregnancy, which greatly cuts the chances they will pass the virus to their babies. But the Mississippi mom got no prenatal care and her HIV was discovered during labor. Doctors considered the baby to be at such high risk that they started the child on three powerful medicines 30 hours after birth, rather than waiting for a test to confirm infection as is usually done.

Within a month, the baby’s virus fell to undetectable levels. She remained on treatment until she was 18 months old when doctors lost contact with her. Ten months later when she returned, they could find no sign of infection even though the mom had stopped giving the child AIDS medicines.

Only one other person is thought to have been cured of HIV infection — a San Francisco man who had a bone marrow transplant in 2007 from a donor with natural resistance to HIV, and showed no sign of infection five years later.

In the Mississippi baby, “there’s no immune mechanism we can identify that would keep the virus in check” like that bone marrow donor, said another study author, Dr. Deborah Persaud of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, who helped investigate the case because she has researched treatment in children.

Dr. Peter Havens, pediatric HIV chief at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and a government adviser on HIV treatment guidelines, said the child may have an undiscovered genetic trait that helped her manage the virus.

“I’m just not convinced that her dramatic response would be replicable in a large population,” he said. It’s too soon to recommend treating other high-risk babies so aggressively without more study, he said.

In the upcoming study, doctors plan to give AIDS medicines for at least two years and watch for signs of remission before suspending treatment and seeing whether a remission results.

The Mississippi case “did open people’s eyes further” about a possible cure, Luzuriaga said. “We might be able to intervene early and spare children a lifetime of therapy. That is the potential impact of this case.”

6 Tips For Best Skin

Skin Care

Have you ever looked at someones skin and thought how lucky they are to have such young, vibrant skin?  Of course you have… we all have!  It’s just not fair!  There are some genetically blessed individuals out there who do have great skin but no matter how flawless it is, aging gets to everyone.  Now we find that healthy, young skin is very rarely good genetics; these 6 tips are essential to keep your skin young and healthy.

They cleanse gently, once a day.

Unless you have oily skin, you only need to wash your face in the evening, with a creamy cleanser and lukewarm water. Give the cleanser time to work. “Instead of scrubbing your face, let the cleanser sit on your skin for several seconds and break down the makeup, dirt, and oil,” says Boston dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, MD. In the morning, simply splash your face with lukewarm water. (If you’re oily, use a gentle foaming cleanser morning and evening.)

They reapply sunscreen.

You know that the number one way to prevent skin aging is to apply sunscreen, so of course you already use a morning moisturizer with an SPF of (at least) 30. What women with gorgeous skin also do: Reapply sunscreen every few hours. Sun-shielding ingredients are only effective for about two hours—long enough to protect your skin on a morning walk or commute but not throughout the afternoon. New York City dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, MD, keeps Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Powder Brush SPF 30 ($50, Colorescience.com) in her bag because it’s easy to brush on over makeup (and on the back of her hands or décolletage) throughout the day.

They use a retinoid cream every night.

“The first time I meet someone, I immediately know if she’s using a retinoid because her skin is glowy and smooth,” says Miami dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that have been proven to boost collagen, which reduces fine lines, and to speed cell turnover, which evens out discoloration. Retinoids are available over-the-counter (as retinol) or with a prescription (as tretinoin, adapalene, and tazarotene). Because retinoids can cause some irritation at first, Hirsch recommends applying a gentle moisturizer, letting it soak in for at least 30 minutes, then applying your retinoid cream.

They eat salmon, and consume lots of antioxidants.

Salmon’s high omega-3 content helps hydrate skin from the inside out and reduce the inflammation that can cause skin redness, says Baumann. And antioxidant-rich foods and drinks—blueberries, dark greens, green tea and coffee—help fight free radicals that can damage the cellular structures of the skin, accelerating skin aging.

They break a sweat.

Raising your heart rate once a day makes your skin glow. Because exercise improves your circulation and oxygen capacity, it improves your complexion. “And we know that the skin has endorphin receptors, which may also explain why it is positively impacted by aerobic exercise,” says Baumann.

They sleep at least 7 hours a night.

Cortisol, the stress hormone, ages the skin and can cause acne. Sleep reduces the cortisol level in your body. So it’s a simple equation: Sleep = younger, clearer skin.

Women with smooth, radiant skin aren’t just lucky. They tend to have six daily habits in common.

Girls Night Halloween Style

halloween-wallpaper-55

When you were younger, everyone had several “girls nights”; they always consisted of talking about boy drama, crying, laughing, and eating lots of chocolate and popcorn.  Telling that to the guys never gave it much justice… what made it so fun?  Now that we’re older we still want to partake in the good food but it’s the socializing part that makes it so amazing!

Mindful Women Spa is hosting a fun little get-together this Halloween!  It’s our second year for our tradition and due to our high outcome last year, we made it two nights instead of one (Oct 22-23).  Lady’s from all over the valley come to our South Ogden spa because we have such a high-class facility.  This year’s event includes a black flame candle massage, pumpkin facial, glitter tattoos, bewitching makeup tricks, bounce-back coupons, refreshments, discounts, card readings and not to mention a place you’ll meet plenty of new friends. We’ve combined the fun of a girls night with the treatments and skin care for which our bodies yearn so you can enjoy the night.

Call in to reserve a place, they run out quickly but don’t get discouraged…we’re doing a Christmas special when the time comes!!

Benefits You Don’t Know About Facials

There are several benefits that come with enjoying a facial; everything from increased circulation, reduced blood pressure, increased lymphatic drainage, and reduced congestion.

4 Surprising Health Benefits of Facials

Facials are popular beauty rituals, but these indulgent spa treatments may also include four surprising health benefits:
Facials Can Increase CirculationThe warm steam that is applied to the face during a facial not only helps to open pores, but it can also open blood vessels and increase circulation. Increasing circulation to the face helps bring beneficial nutrients and oxygen to the skin which in turn encourages new cell growth. [Livestrong.com] In addition to the steam, the light massage that is used to apply facial products can also increase circulation to the face and neck.Facial Health Tip: Check with your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough for a facial treatment without the risk of bruising or more serious health complications. This is especially important if you are on any type of cardiovascular medication.Facials May Help Reduce Blood Pressure Caused by Stress

According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can temporarily raise your blood pressure to unhealthy levels. The hormones that the body releases under stress can cause an increase in heart rate and a narrowing of the blood vessels. Reducing stress, anxiety, and tension can help to lower the risk of temporary spikes in blood pressure.

The calming atmosphere of the spa room, a soothing facial treatment, and just taking a few minutes to relax may help reduce the risk of short-term high blood pressure due to anxiety and stress. In addition to setting aside time for a facial treatment, lower your risk of high blood pressure by making healthy lifestyle choices, eating a balanced low-sodium diet, and exercising regularly.

Facial Health Tip: You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars at fancy salons to experience this health benefit from a facial. Set aside time once a week to do your own facial at home. Turn your bathroom into a relaxing oasis, put on some soothing music, and take a few minutes to let go of stress and pamper your skin.

Facials Can Increase Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is made up of a network of lymph nodes or glands located throughout the body, including many in the neck and chest. These glands are an integral part of the immune system and also work to drain excess fluid from parts of the body. [InnerBody.com]

During a facial, as the esthetician rubs the products into the skin around the neck and chest, the lymphatic system is stimulated. By “awakening” these lymph nodes, the body increases drainage, and helps to reduce any fluid retention in the face and upper body; this helps one receiving a facial feel and look less “puffy.”

Facial Health Tip: Make sure to drink plenty of water after a facial. As your lymphatic system shifts into high gear, make sure that you hydrate to help flush out toxins that may have been released during the facial massage.

Facials Can Help Reduce Minor Congestion

The spa may be the last place you would think to go when you feel congested, however, the combination of steam and massage that accompanies many types of facials may help to reduce the pressure associated with both nasal and sinus congestion. The steam can help to open clogged nasal passages and massaging certain pressure points on the face can help to reduce sinus pressure and congestion. [Livestrong.com]

Facial Health Tip: For extra congestion relief consider treatments that use eucalyptus or peppermint essential oils. Aromatherapy treatments using these two essential oils are thought to be effective at reducing nasal congestion.

Why You’ll Love Facials

Our skin is the bodies largest organ and it is under a constant beating from the sun, wind, water, bugs, bacteria etc.  This article goes into detail why facials are so important.

Why You Will Love the Benefits of Facials

Posted by  on Friday, November 9, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Benefits of FacialsNo matter your age or gender, your body’s largest organ is your skin. If you want your skin (especially on the face) to look its best and stay healthy, you need to take care of it.  Healthy, good looking skin begins with skin care. Facials are an essential ingredient of your overall skin care program.

What is a facial?

A facial is a spa therapy and massage that leaves your skin cleaner, softer, younger, and truly transformed. Facials can help clear clogged pores, quench parched skin and remove dead cells. Facials involve some massage which aids in blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.  The facial massage also helps to relax facial muscles which can slow the onset of wrinkles on the face. Puffiness reduction, sagging in the face and skin cell renewal are additional benefits from these massage techniques.

What are some benefits of a facial?

  • Facials help reduce the impact of sun exposure, smoking and other environmental factors as well as incorrect product use.
  • Women are more susceptible to aging due to stress. Facials help reduce stress. While stress is quickly rising to number in the premature aging process, it can also act as a rosacea trigger, shorten the life span of your skin cells, aggravate acne and other skin inflammations.
  • During your facial, your licensed aesthestic, will recommend appropriate skin care for home use to help you continue the benefits of our facial and correct ongoing skin care issues.

A transforming experience, getting a facial is an absolutely enjoyable skin treatment. You will feel relaxed, pampered and your skin will feel simply amazing after your facial.

You will certainly reap the benefits of a facial during the change of seasons. At a minimum, you should receive a facial treatment four times per year, as the seasons change. Regular facials are the key to clear, smooth and radiant skin throughout the year.
